CARPENTER'S LACE

Savannah Blaze Lee

As a prolific artist and writer, the ratio of creative ideas to time required is seldom balanced, but there are a few activities about which I'm passionate. One such is the Mary Little Project, created to give children more choices than they now have, in order to help them develop into men and women who are fully conscious of their choices and capabilities, without regard to gender or stereotypes. These are actual dolls (most 24" tall with a few 18") and began as prototypes for a line of "toys" that would foster a healthier self image for children than is now available. They soon became something much more personal, in order to supply them with their own environments, they evolved into objet d'arts. It sometimes takes months to complete the entire personae and characters are limited to one-of-a-kind, because it became important to me that these children go to good homes or stay where they are presently loved. A portion of proceeds from my art and literature goes to prevention of domestic violence.

I've been a WA resident for almost a decade now, a retired carpenter almost that long, and make my home in tiny Quilcene. I continue to enjoy sawdust by creating Victorian dollhouses, satisfy my Pennsylvania Dutch heritage with painted quilts and dolls, and spend my leisure hours writing books and renovating a 1940s cottage. .

DEGREE: BFA, Summa cum laude, with dual majors in 2D and 3D Art (emphasis on trompe l'oeil), minor in Creative Writing from University of Wisconsin at Whitewater attained at the age of 50 years young.

ARTIST'S OVERVIEW: Although my work and studies have been pursued with the goal of obtaining skills in as many genres as possible, my focus encompasses two venues: 1) to distort the size and perception of the viewers' realities allowing momentary escape and 2) changing the future of women by structuring theirs and their children's ideas regarding possibilities of self-actualization and the ability to challenge the status quo through creativity.
