Dean Nelson

Dean took up painting and piano playing after he retired as an engineer.  Painting was not completely foreign to  him as his wife, Beverly, is an artist and he had become her major critic.  Beverly's paintings that he least liked seemed to be the first to sell.  He found creating the effects he liked in other artist's work more difficult to achieve than he ever imagined.  A background in engineering was helpful with perspective but it also bogged him down in endless detail. 

Lessons from his wife and workshops with Wanda Mumm, Heiner Hertling, Nicholas Oberling and Stella Canfield helped him grasp the concepts of color, composition, and values.  Endless hours of sketching taught him to quickly capture the major elements of a scene.

Dean paints purely for enjoyment, mainly landscapes, and finds himself analyzing a special scene, trying to figure out how best to convey to the viewer the same beauty he sees.
