Christine Witte

Artist Statement

“I love the color and flow of watercolors. Subjects for my paintings can be taken from anywhere – a play of light on a piece of driftwood, the feeling of friendship emanating from two children, the energy and color of a goldfinch. I enjoy learning about my subject. I research the feeding and nesting habits of a bird or the structure of a plant; I draw and study the texture, the perspective, and lighting possibilities. I try to visually emphasize what it was that caught my interest about the subject and transfer it into a design in watercolor.”

Christine Witte, a Pacific Northwest native, draws much of the inspiration for her watercolors from nature. Gardening, camping, hiking, fishing, mushroom picking, bird watching, traveling with her camera and sketchbook in hand, provides unlimited subject matter. As a child, drawing was one of her favorite pastimes. In college Christine majored in graphic design, worked as a drafter in an engineering office for a few years, then returned to school, and earned her mechanical engineering degree. After school, she worked several years as a project engineer, and recently retired as an engineering manager from The Boeing Company.

Christine's medium of choice is water color painting. She studied watercolor painting for over seven years from Pamela Harold, (Artist/Watercolorist, Women Painters’ of Washington) and has participated in workshops from a variety of artists such as Jan Kunz and Susan McKinnon, and recently with Judy Morris in the Greek Islands. Although Christine loves watercolor painting best, she also enjoys creating in other media such as fabric, acrylics, wood, and has always loved photography, which she uses to record potential painting subjects. Christine has had several private shows and has displayed her paintings in local art fairs and public buildings. She currently shows her work in the Olympic Art Gallery in Quilcene, WA. Christine is married to her high school sweetheart, Mark Witte.
