Scrollsaw Art is handcrafted original artwork. A scrollsaw is a reciprocating table saw with a very fragile blade. The blade I use is 10 thousands thick and 23 thousands wide with 27 teeth per inch. Cutting speed is rather slow at 300 strokes per minute. The type wood used in most of my work is spalded big leaf maple. It gives the artwork an added three dimensional quality and color that makes each piece unique. The average time to produce a piece of artwork is approximately 40 hours. This includes the design and layout work, slabwork (cutting the thickness of wood) , planning, sanding, sawing the artwork and finishing the wood with polymerized linseed oil or tung oil. The oil is used to bring out the natural colors of the wood and preserve it. Selection of wood is an art in itself, you have to design a theme that fits the wood. The size and shape are always different, this is why I like working with wood so much. I never know for sure what the piece will look like until it's finished with the oil, this brings out the natural color in the wood. I do have a pretty good feel so it's not a total surprise. Maple is my favorite wood, it has a tight grain allowing me to make intricate cuts. It also has many different colors and wood grains giving me the flexibility to decide not only the shape but also the color. As you will see with all my work there will rarely be any straight lines on the outside edges of my artwork. I use a chain saw to shape the wood giving it a rustic look. My primary interest are wildlife, fishing, hunting and western themes. Al also do commissioned designs, putting together a scene that someone has requested.
