Al Copeland grew up in Prineville, Oregon, class of 1958. He taught school in Roseburg, Oregon for 31 years, retiring in 1998. Al taught art, and coached track and cross country. He and his wife, Juanita, moved to Prineville in 1999. They enjoy fishing and going to several art festivals throughout the year to sell Al's carvings. Al has been carving seriously for the last nine or ten years, doing mostly fish. Al occasionally will carve various birds and animals. He uses a variety of woods. His favorite wood is gelutong, a soft straight grain wood from the Philippines. Most of his carvings are airbrushed with a liquid acrylic and tend to be quite realistic. Each carving take a lot of time, and is very fragile.
